A first Bahamas trip? Start in Nassau, then go quiet.

There’s a certain snobbery about Nassau in Bahamas travel advice — skip it, go straight to the Out Islands, don’t waste a night. We think that’s wrong for a first trip, and here’s why.

Nassau is where the flights are. Direct routes from most US hubs land here, and onward hops to Exuma or Eleuthera go from the same airport. Fighting that means paying more and spending a travel day you didn’t need to.

Two nights is the sweet spot

Long enough for the fish fry at Arawak Cay, a morning on Cable Beach before the strip wakes up, and an afternoon wandering the colonial streets downtown. Short enough that you’re gone before the cruise-ship rhythm starts to wear.

Then fly on. Georgetown is under ninety minutes away, and the contrast is the whole point — you’ll appreciate the quiet more for having had the noise first.

The quiet beaches nobody mentions

Nassau’s reputation is built on the resort strip, but drive twenty minutes west to Love Beach or south toward Adelaide and it thins out completely. Sand that feels far more Out-Island than a place with this many hotels has any right to.

If you only remember one thing: the busiest island in the Bahamas has empty beaches on it, and almost nobody staying at the resorts ever finds them.
