Getting to Grand Bahama from Florida: Ferry or Flight?

Grand Bahama gets pitched as the easiest Bahamian island to reach from Florida, and it mostly holds up — you’ve actually got two real ways in, not just one. Based on what actual renters and hosts in our community have told us works, here’s how the ferry and the flight actually compare, not just which one sounds nicer.

The ferry: Fort Lauderdale to Freeport

Baleària Caribbean runs the only scheduled passenger ferry between Florida and the Bahamas — a high-speed catamaran, the Jaume II, covering the roughly 85-mile crossing in about 3 hours. It departs Port Everglades’ Terminal 21 in Fort Lauderdale, typically around 9 a.m., and arrives at Freeport Harbour’s Terminal 2 around midday. As of now it runs twice a week, Wednesday and Sunday, so it’s worth checking the current schedule before building a trip around it. Round-trip fares run roughly $220–240.

It’s a genuinely different way to arrive than flying — no security line stress, more luggage room, and if you’d rather not fly at all, it’s the only option that gets you there without an airplane.

Flying to Grand Bahama from Florida

Flying is the more flexible option, with several airlines serving Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) from Florida: American Airlines from Miami, Bahamasair from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, and Western Air and WestJet on the route as well. Tampa has direct service too. It’s a short hop — well under two hours in the air from any South Florida airport — and with multiple airlines running the route, you’re not locked into a twice-a-week schedule the way the ferry runs.

Neither is the “wrong” choice — it mostly comes down to whether your travel dates line up with the ferry’s twice-weekly schedule, and how much you’re bringing.

Getting from the airport or dock to Lucaya

However you arrive, Port Lucaya isn’t far. From Grand Bahama International Airport it’s about 6 miles — a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride running roughly $20–25. From Freeport Harbour it’s a bit farther and estimates vary by source, but plan on somewhere around 10–20 minutes and $15–35 depending on the taxi operator — confirm the fare before you get in, same as anywhere else in the Bahamas. What it actually costs

Between the ferry (~$220–240 round trip) or a flight (more variable, often in a similar range depending on airline and season) plus a $20–35 taxi each way, budget somewhere in the low-to-mid hundreds per person just to get to Grand Bahama and into town.
